Squamish Green Business Award 2016:
Squamish CAN was honoured to present Kelly and John of Gillespie’s Fine Spirits with the Squamish Green Business award at the annual Chamber of Commerce Awards. The award highlighted all of the hard work that the company is doing behind the scenes to integrate sustainability throughout their business. Right from the start, Gillespie’s Fine Spirits made several decisions that greatly impacted the amount of waste their business produced. This included choosing to not make mini-bottles, to be a straw-free company, to use reusable or compostable cups and partnering with a local farmer to take the spent grain waste. Plus they put a lot of effort into supporting the local economy, as 100% of their fruits and agriculture products are from BC, that which they don’t forage themselves, and they worked hard to find a bottle manufacturer based in North America. Additionally, a lot of their equipment has been repurposed, keeping it out of the landfill and making a mean vodka at the same time!
It’s companies like Gillespie’s Fine Spirits that lead the way as sustainability business leaders in Squamish. Congratulations to Kelly & John! And make sure to check out their Tasting Room, if you haven’t had a chance to yet!
Squamish Green Business Award 2015:
Squamish CAN is happy to announce that Be Clean Naturally Soap Shoppe is the winner of the 2015 Squamish Green Business Award.
Be Clean Naturally’s business vision is to be completely sustainable, from the way ingredients are farmed, what packaging materials are used (if at all), to supporting other local businesses, all the while ensuring that the shop is financially sustainable. This commitment to reducing their environmental impact is integrated throughout the day to day operations of Be Clean Naturally and shared with customers through education and empowerment.
Green Business Award 2011
The panel of judges was particularly impressed with the degree of commitment, the creativity, the thoroughness, and the quality of changes implemented in Newport Auto Inc’s operations as this business looks constantly for ways to reduce their impact on the environment. Newport Auto Inc demonstrates a hugely proactive approach towards sustainability in a business that we wouldn’t normally or naturally associate with “green” enterprises or standards. As such, this environmentally-minded and dedicated small local business provides us with priceless exemplary behaviour and the valuable lesson that we can all take action to reduce our environmental footprint regardless the nature of our personal activities and occupations.
Congratulations to Newport Auto Inc, but congratulations as well to all other participants for their equally valuable efforts to lead by example: ISL Engineering; Outwest Sports with I-Tune-It; Cascade Environmental Resource Group; Sea to Sky Babies; Capilano University – Squamish Campus; The Nature Nest; Rona Squamish; Squamish Therapeutics; In The Raw Organics Specialty Bulk Foods and Goods; Green Clean Squamish
Newport Auto Inc will receive formal recognition at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the CN Roundhouse on June 21
